K-12 Reading Teacher Graduate Certificate

Add reading and literacy skills to your teaching credentials in just seven courses.

Whether you wish to focus on literacy skills to help students one-on-one or want to enhance reading instruction for an entire class, the K-12 Reading Teacher certificate provides you with the literacy instruction expertise to engage and motivate students.


This program is for licensed educators who want to prepare for licensure as a K-12 reading teacher. It prepares Minnesota candidates to seek a K-12 Reading license and Wisconsin candidates to seek a 316 Reading license.


Required Courses (17 credits)

ESL600 Foundations of Language and Literacy Development (1-3 cr.)

EDRD601 Elementary Reading Instruction: K-6 (2 cr.)

EDRD602 Secondary Reading Instruction: 7-12 (2 cr.)

ESL603 Reading Instruction for Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Learners (1-3 cr.)

EDRD604 Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (3 cr.)

EDRD605 Clinical Language and Reading Practicum (3 cr.)

EDRD606 Development and Supervision of K-12 Reading Programs (2 cr.)

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate program, you will be able to do the following:

  • Employ a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading instruction with elementary, middle, and high school students.
